Synopsis The X-Files: Season 10, Episode 3

When a dead body is found in the woods, Mulder and Scully are called in to investigate whether it was an animal attack, a serial killer or just maybe a strange creature as described by eyewitnesses. Meanwhile, Mulder is able to confront some of his own demons about feeling disillusioned with his life's work.

 

Review :

Gives hope

The re-start button they pushed on the X-Files didn't result in anything spectacular so far. Mulder is bored to death. So is Scully. It's as though they were invited to do an X-files reunion, but it turned out to be way too long.

Still, this episode does show that there is potential here. These reflexive, humorous episodes have been quite successful in the past, and now that Mulder and Scully are a middle-aged pair, they certainly can capitalize on all the past experience and have fun with the meta-humour.

There are some problems, though. While the premise for this episode is a good one, it is obvious that the writing is somewhat superficial. There are things that do not make sense in this episode, which could have easily been fixed had they invested time in polishing the script. But clearly the whole thing was rushed, and that is a shame.

In any event, humour is something they can still rely on if they decide to make another season. They can't overdo it, though, and another solution is to start doing the 'mythology' episodes in a different way. Give the protagonists fresh motivation and start rewarding the audience for enduring hours of conspiracy theories. For once let the protagonists figure out what's going on and don't tell the audience it was all a lie in the very next episode. If everything Mulder and Scully have been on to has always turned out to be a lie, why would anyone want to keep watching?
