Synopsis Dexter: Season 8, Episode 1
It's now 6 months since Captain LaGuerta's death. Dexter is still working as a blood spatter expert but Deb has quit the force and is now working as a private investigator. She's also been avoiding Dexter as much as possible. Angel Batista is now the squad's Lieutenant and Tom Matthews is a Deputy Chief. Dexter is worried about Deb in general but even more so after he hears she hasn't been in touch with her new boss for two weeks. Metro homicide has a new case after a body is found on the beach. The man's skull has been sliced open and a small part of his brain removed. Matthews introduces a civilian expert, Dr. Evelyn Vogel, who has volunteered her time to help with the investigation. Dexter is distrustful of her from the outset and with good reason as it turns out: she seems to know a great deal about him.
Review :
A beautiful day?
There is a certain pattern that many series have, fluctuating from one season to another. There are many of which first season is amazing and the last one is really bad. That is what parts the good series from the bad ones.
And this is confirmed a good one. When I saw the first episode of highly expected season 8, I was first of all very impressed and after that I thought of all the changes that Dexter went through in the seven seasons of the show. A number of rises, falls and evolutions in his mind, in his personality led to this point, to the point where everything in his life gets compromised.
In this season we get to know the contrast of the main characters. There is another layer added to them, and you can just feel an amazing story coming up. Also the new character is very intriguing, her looks suit her role perfectly, and the theme of this season, "the psychology of a killer" seems very fitting for the last season, and it seems like Dexter will learn something from it. As far as Debra's concerned, it looks like she's at a point of no return currently, and the storyline of the first episode shows her hollowness very well and strongly implies that there could be something dark growing inside her... Like it has gradually grown in Dexter. But will it take her over? Or will she find strength somewhere and try to make sense out of everything, again?
Loved how this particular episode was shot and loved the humour in it. Esp. loved the *fucking password* joke (no spoiling intented, you'll see it yourself), the kind of humour which only this show can pull off and even make it look good. It is totally out of place but it gets Dexter the kind of spunk that it has always had.
10/10 easily, for the way the writers continually hold the story well connected, for the jokes, for the whole philosophy of the new season, for the way it is shot, for the dialogues between Dex and Debra and for amazing acting by Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter.
